As soon as the last of the Christmas turkey is in the dog, the availability enquiries start here at The Studio for weddings. ‘I want to look really natural, I don’t wear much makeup, are you free on…………….’ is the mantra of the Bride to Be, and there really is nothing more special than being involved with a Bride and her Wedding Party for what is the most important day of her life.

Last year saw the rise of the ‘Destination Bride’ and I happily spent time with these lovely ladies and their attendants designing looks and showing them the techniques and pro tips that would allow them to recreate their makeup design on location. It’s an area that shouldn’t be overlooked if you are planning an overseas wedding as your trusty old mascara and a quick swirl of the bronzer brush probably won’t make the grade in warmer climates. We’ll be having no panda eyes in your wedding album sweetheart, it really isn’t a look you want captured on film!
This year though the DIY Bride is shaking her ivory silk slingback at us with a passion. It’s the thought of getting more confetti for her cash that keeps her going while she spends hours searching the internet for online bridal bargains. That day she spent visiting EVERY fabric shop within a 30 mile radius was worth the effort when she found the perfect shade of satin for the bridesmaid’s sashes at a truly discounted price. So when she calls me and says ‘I’d like to apply my own makeup on the day, but I’m not sure where to start’, believe me, I’m right there with ya sister.
Bridal makeup is all about creating the very best, picture perfect version of yourself, don’t forget those wedding photographs are going to make a huge comeback 25 years down the line when your delightful children utilise their IT skills by printing them off ten times larger and displaying them to abundance at your silver wedding anniversary celebration.
So whether you are a ‘D’ for Destination or a ‘D’ for DIY Bride, my wedding gift to you is a short list of Do’s and Dont’s
• Do keep your look classic, elegant, soft and pretty.
• Do arrange a session with a makeup artist to brush up your application skills and talk through your thoughts and ideas.
• Do look for products that have long lasting formulations – primers, silicone based blushers and fine shimmer (not sparkle!) crease resistant shadows.
• Do have your foundation colour matched by a professional, and check it in good light, preferably natural daylight, before you buy.
• Layer lip liner, lipstick and gloss to reduce re-applications.
• Don’t forget your touch up kit – powder, lipstick, gloss, tissues and a few cotton buds should be all you need, add in a matte shadow, charcoal grey is very versatile, and you can adapt your eye makeup for the evening too.
• Do practice applying your look until you are totally confident.
